Before I visited Indonesia, I did what most people do. I searched for the most beautiful beaches in the country. Bali came up at the top of almost every list. And Bali is beautiful — I won’t argue with that. But when I crossed to the neighbouring island of Lombok, I was blown away in a way Bali never managed. To me, the beaches in Kuta Lombok are the finest in Indonesia. Possibly the finest I have seen anywhere.
Dotted with countless unspoiled, uncrowded, enormous beaches with turquoise water and surrounded by green mountains, Kuta in Lombok is one of the most stunning places to visit in all of Southeast Asia — especially if you are a beach lover who craves tranquility alongside beauty.
This is the complete guide to the best beaches in Kuta Lombok: every beach worth visiting, how to get there, where to stay, where to eat, and how to make the most of your time in the south of the island.

The short version: Kuta Lombok is what Kuta Bali was decades ago, before tourism changed everything. Come here while it still feels like this.
Where Is Lombok?
Lombok is an island of Indonesia sitting just east of Bali, only 25 minutes away by plane. It is, in my view, the finest beach destination on earth — and within Lombok, the southern Kuta area is its centrepiece.
How to Get to Kuta Lombok
You can go to Lombok in several ways.
- Arriving Lombok by Air
Lombok has its own international airport (LOP) in Praya, about 30 minutes from Kuta. It is served by direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and multiple Indonesian cities. From Bali, the flight takes just 25 minutes and costs under USD $30 one way on most carriers.
- Arriving Lombok by Public Ferry or fast boat
Public ferries run from Bali to Lombok in around 4 hours. Fast boats from Padang Bai in Bali to Bangsal harbour in North Lombok take approximately 2 hours.

📌 Book: Jakarta to Lombok (12GoAsia) - From the airport to Kuta:
The airport is about 30 minutes south of Kuta. Bluebird taxis are metered and reliable. Grab also works. A private pre-booked transfer is the smoothest option — your driver meets you at arrivals with no negotiation required.

Best Time to Visit Kuta Lombok
April to November is the dry season and the best time to visit. Seas are calm, surf is consistent, roads are good, and the sky stays blue. This is when Kuta is at its best.
July to September is peak season — the waves at Mawi, Gerupuk, and Tanjung Aan are at their best and the surf community is most active. Still uncrowded by any normal standard, just slightly less empty than the shoulder months.
December to March is the wet season. Afternoon downpours are common, some beach access roads become difficult, and rough seas can disrupt boat trips. Still possible but less ideal.
October 2026 — MotoGP Warning: The Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, just 15 minutes from Kuta, hosts MotoGP in October 2026. Accommodation books out months in advance. Either plan around it or book very early.
Where to Go in Lombok
Lombok covers 4,725 square kilometres, slightly smaller than Bali but with far fewer crowds. The main areas to visit are:
- Kuta — the south coast surf and beach hub (this guide)
- Senggigi — the comfortable resort base on the west coast
- Ekas — remote surf and dramatic cliffs on the southeast
- Sekotong — wild islands and deserted beaches on the southwest
- Gili Islands — the famous trio of islands off the northwest coast
- Mount Rinjani — Indonesia’s second highest volcano and a world-class multi-day trek

Best Beaches in Kuta Lombok
Kuta sits in the southern region of Lombok, only 30 minutes from the airport. The town has its own beach, but the real draw is the series of beaches accessible by scooter — some just minutes away, others requiring a longer ride on roads that vary from smooth tarmac to muddy adventure tracks. Every one of them is worth it.
Kuta Beach — Most Accessible, Best for Evenings

Kuta Beach sits right in the town centre. Walk past the promenade and you reach a sizable beach with a mountain on one side. Because most visitors and locals base themselves in Kuta town, this beach sees more foot traffic than the others — which makes it one of the livelier spots in an otherwise quiet area.

The water at Kuta Beach is calmer than most of its neighbours, making it a reasonable option for a swim without travelling far. You will find swings on the beach, a convenience store nearby, and a large parking area. If you have spent the day exploring deserted beaches further west, Kuta Beach offers a pleasing change of energy in the evening.
It is the most accessible beach in the area and a natural starting and ending point for your daily explorations.
Are Guling (Areguling) Beach — Unspoiled and Virtually Empty

From Kuta, head west and the first beach you encounter is Are Guling, also known as Areguling. This is a humongous stretch of turquoise water flanked by green hills, and when I visited I shared it with almost nobody. The scale of it and the emptiness are what make it remarkable.

Surfers will find two breaks here. Some bungalows are available nearby. Are Guling is close to the village of Tumpak, whose residents own the land — you can rent a villa on top of the nearby hill with a breathtaking view over the whole area.

After spending a long time at this beach, I found exactly two other tourists. In most countries, this beach would be famous. Here it’s just another stretch of Lombok coastline.
Mawun Beach — The Most Beautiful Beach in Kuta Lombok

Of all the beaches in Kuta Lombok, Mawun is my favourite.
Reaching it involves a choice. You can take the main road, which is straightforward. Or you can take the rough track that runs parallel to the beach, through fields where bison graze and occasionally block your path entirely. I took the track. It was muddy, difficult, and tremendous fun.

Mawun Beach is crescent-shaped and absolutely stunning. Mountains rise on both sides — the one to the right is particularly beautiful — and the curve of white sand between them is vast enough to fit an entire football stadium. I visited several times and found it empty every time. No crowds, no noise, just the beach and the ocean and the mountains.

During my first visit, there was no restaurant. On my second, a small boutique warung had appeared, serving homemade food and offering a few chairs. Things are developing slowly, but for now Mawun remains one of the most peaceful beaches I have visited anywhere in the world.
Mawun is the best beach in Kuta Lombok for tranquility.
Lancing Beach — Where I Took My Profile Photo

After Mawun, the insatiable curiosity that makes travel worthwhile drove me further west. Lancing Beach appeared next — another gem, another vast stretch of turquoise water surrounded by mountains, and virtually no one on it.

I didn’t find any restaurants or facilities at Lancing. The water looks shallow but carries a reasonably strong current — don’t be fooled by the appearance.
Two things make Lancing memorable beyond the beach itself. The first is a swing positioned just beside the ocean, which was mine entirely on the day I visited. The second is a roofed wooden platform, perfect for sitting, resting, and photographing. I’ve been using an image from that platform as my profile photo across several platforms. If you’ve ever wondered where it was taken, it’s right here on Lancing Beach in Lombok.
Bring your own food and water. There is nothing here and that’s exactly why it’s special.
Lancing is the best beach in Kuta Lombok for photographs.
Selong Belanak Beach — Best for Swimming and Beginner Surfing

Driving 10 kilometres further west from Lancing brings you to one of the most popular and well-known beaches in south Lombok. Unlike the wild, empty stretches to the east, Selong Belanak has infrastructure — several restaurants, accommodation options, surf schools, and equipment rental. The vibe reminded me of Bali, but with more beautiful beaches and far fewer people.

The sand at Selong Belanak is an extraordinary sugar colour. Not as white as Tanjung Aan, but beautiful in its own distinctive way. On the day I visited, the beach was alive with activity: people surfing, swimming, sunbathing, kite surfing, and walking. The energy felt completely different from the deserted beaches I had explored all morning.
Selong Belanak is about 25 kilometres from Kuta, making it one of the furthest easily accessible beaches from town. It is absolutely worth the drive, especially if you want to learn to surf — the waves here are genuinely ideal for beginners, consistent and manageable, and good instructors are available right on the beach.
Selong Belanak is the best beach in Kuta Lombok for swimming and learning to surf.
Tanjung Aan Beach — Whitest Sand in Indonesia

I had already seen enough beautiful beaches by the time I reached Tanjung Aan that I thought nothing could surprise me anymore. Tanjung Aan surprised me.

I have never seen sand that white anywhere in the world. At one point, standing there, I genuinely wondered if someone had painted it. The beach stretches for over 2 kilometres without a break — an uninterrupted arc of white powder sand, impossibly blue water, and a scale that a camera simply cannot capture properly. I hiked up to Merese Hill to try to photograph the full length of it. Even from up there, with the entire arc visible below me, the beach continued beyond the frame.

The calm bay on the western end is good for swimming. The eastern end, past the large boulder, is often deserted even when the western end has visitors. Surfers can access breaks by paddling out or taking a boat from shore.

⚠️ 2026 Update — Important: The established warungs that used to line Tanjung Aan beach have been demolished by the government to make way for a luxury resort development. Many family businesses that had operated there for 15 years or more were lost in the process. As of April 2026, some former warung owners are operating small temporary stalls on the beach, but the experience is fundamentally different from what it once was. The beach itself — the sand, the water, the scale — remains as magnificent as ever. But visitors should know that the community character of this place has changed significantly.
Tanjung Aan is the best beach in Kuta Lombok for the colour of the sand and sheer scale. Do not miss sunset from Merese Hill.
DO NOT MISS: Sunset from Merese hill which is adjacent to Tanjung Aaan Beach.
Seger Beach — Best Local Surf and Viewpoints
About 10 minutes east of Kuta town, Seger Beach is one of the closest surfable beaches to the town centre. A 25-minute walk from the main hub, or a 5-minute scooter ride alongside the Mandalika circuit road. Seger is best in the morning before the wind picks up, producing A-frame wedges that break over reef and rock, plus a left that rolls in off the central rock formation.
At the top of the adjacent Seger Hill is a popular viewpoint looking back across Kuta town, Mandalika Beach, and the sweep of Kuta Bay. Good for both sunrise and sunset depending on the day. A small family-owned warung at the beach serves drinks, snacks, and hot food.
Gerupuk — Best Offshore Surf Breaks
A short drive east of Tanjung Aan brings you to Gerupuk, one of the most significant surf destinations in Indonesia. The breaks here are located well offshore and require a boat to reach — arrangements can be made at the harbour with local surf guides. Gerupuk has multiple breaks catering to different skill levels, making it popular with everyone from improving intermediates to serious wave hunters.
Even if you don’t surf, Gerupuk village has a beautiful, relaxed harbour atmosphere worth the short drive from Tanjung Aan.
Mawi Beach — Most Powerful Surf, Most Remote
Mawi is the most consistent surf beach near Kuta, picking up more swell than anywhere else in the area and capable of producing powerful, large waves when the rest of the coast is small. There is a short left and a right that really comes alive on low tide. Plenty of locals surf here — show respect in the lineup.
Getting to Mawi takes about 40 minutes west of Kuta on the paved road, followed by 15 minutes down a rough dirt track. The effort is worth it even if you don’t surf. The scenery on the way is beautiful and the beach itself is dramatic.
Bukit Merese — Best Sunset Viewpoint in Kuta Lombok
Bukit Merese is not a beach but belongs in any beach guide for Kuta Lombok. The hill sits adjacent to Tanjung Aan and from its summit you can see the entire arc of white sand below, the turquoise water stretching to the horizon, and on clear evenings the sun descending into the Indian Ocean in a display of colour that is genuinely extraordinary.
Many people gather here with snacks and drinks in the hour before sunset. Go early to find a good spot, carry out your rubbish, and watch where you step — the hillside has resident monkeys who can be bold around food.
Parking costs IDR 10,000. The walk to the top takes around 5 minutes. Stay until the colours fade completely.
1 to 2 Day Beach Itinerary — How to See the Best of Kuta Lombok
Day 1 — East Side: Seger, Tanjung Aan, Merese Hill
Start your morning at Seger Beach for the early surf and calm atmosphere before the day heats up. Ride east to Tanjung Aan — arrive by 9 AM to get the beach at its quietest. Walk the full length of it, cross the boulder to the deserted eastern end, and take your time. In the afternoon, climb Merese Hill. Stay until sunset. This is one of the great evenings anywhere in Indonesia.
Day 2 — West Side: Are Guling, Mawun, Lancing, Selong Belanak
Head west from Kuta in the morning. Stop at Are Guling first — walk the length of it, take a swim. Continue to Mawun: find it, sit in it, count the waves. Push further west to Lancing and claim the swing as your own. End at Selong Belanak for an afternoon swim and, if you have time, a beginner surf lesson before the light fades.
📌 Book: Sasak Village, Kuta Beach and Tanjung Aan Cape Private Tour (Klook) — if you’d rather have a guide handle the logistics for Day 1.
How to Get Around Kuta Lombok

Scooter Rental — The Best Option
The motorbike is the only real way to explore the beaches of Kuta Lombok freely. It gives you complete flexibility to follow the ocean, take wrong turns, and discover beaches that have no names on any map. The main coastal road is in good condition. The approach roads down to individual beaches vary from decent to genuinely challenging — some are steep and rough, so ride with attention and experience.
Scooter rental costs IDR 50,000 to IDR 80,000 per day (USD $3.50 to $5.50). Fuel is purchased separately at roadside shops and petrol stations. Most hotels and guesthouses can arrange rental, or you can shop around the town centre.

Private Car with Driver
If you are not comfortable on a scooter, or travelling with children, a hired car with driver is the safer and more comfortable alternative. You cover more distance with less stress, and a good local driver will show you roads that don’t appear on Google Maps.
📌 Book: Private Transfer and Car Charter in Lombok (GetYourGuide)
Road Conditions
The main road west from Kuta is good tarmac. Approach roads to individual beaches vary from smooth to rough to muddy. The track I took to Mawun was genuinely difficult — if you are a nervous or inexperienced rider, stick to the main road approach. Some of the roads to Mawi and Semeti require real confidence and appropriate footwear.
⚠️ Always carry travel insurance when riding a scooter. Read about my own bike accident in the Philippines — it can happen anywhere. I use WorldNomads.
💡 Practical tip: Park in shade whenever possible. If there’s no shade, put a towel over the seat before you leave. The heat builds up fast and you’ll regret it on the way to the next beach.
Things to Do Beyond the Beaches
White Water Rafting
If you want a break from the beach for a day, the rivers of central Lombok offer some excellent white water rafting — a genuinely exhilarating half-day that combines jungle scenery with proper rapids. A good complement to all the beach time.

Sasak Village Visit
The indigenous Sasak people of Lombok have a distinct and fascinating culture — traditional bamboo and thatch houses, weaving traditions, and local crafts. A guided village visit near Kuta gives you cultural depth beyond the beaches and directly supports the local community.

What to Pack for Kuta Lombok Beaches
The beaches here are less developed than Bali. Some have no facilities at all. Pack accordingly.
- Sunscreen — the sun is strong and the beaches offer little shade
- A rash guard — for snorkelling and long days on the water
- Water and snacks — especially for Lancing, Mawi, and Semeti where nothing is available
- Cash in Rupiah — ATMs exist in Kuta town but not near the beaches
- A towel for your scooter seat — genuinely useful advice
- Proper shoes — not flip-flops for anything beyond the main beaches; the approach tracks demand grip
- A dry bag or waterproof case — for your phone on the scooter and near the waves
Best Hotels in Kuta Lombok
Hotels in Kuta are clustered in and around the town, within easy scooter distance of the coast. You won’t find beachside hotels clinging to the sand — Kuta Lombok is not yet commercialised in that way, and the beaches stay raw and unspoiled as a result.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kuta Lombok Beaches
Tanjung Aan for the whitest sand and the most spectacular scale. Mawun for tranquility and natural beauty. If I had to pick one, I would go to Mawun in the morning and Tanjung Aan in the afternoon, staying on Merese Hill for sunset.
For beginners, Selong Belanak — consistent, manageable waves and good instructors available right on the beach. For experienced surfers, Mawi and Gerupuk (offshore breaks, requires a boat). Tanjung Aan and Are Guling also have breaks.
Yes, at several. Kuta Beach and Selong Belanak are the safest for swimming. Mawun is good on calm days. Lancing has a strong current despite looking shallow — be careful. Always check conditions with locals before entering the water at any unfamiliar beach.
Yes, for most of them. The beaches west of Kuta are not reachable on foot in a practical sense. Scooter rental is cheap and gives you total freedom. If you are not comfortable on a scooter, hire a private driver — it is worth the extra cost.
Sometimes. You may encounter people at approach roads charging IDR 5,000 to IDR 10,000 (USD $0.35 to $0.70) for parking or entry. Whether these are official is unclear, but the amounts are small and not worth contesting.
As of early 2026, the established warungs along Tanjung Aan were demolished by the government to make way for a luxury resort. Many families who operated businesses there for over 15 years lost their livelihoods. Some former owners now run small temporary stalls on the beach. The sand and water remain magnificent — the community character has changed.
Merese Hill (Bukit Merese), adjacent to Tanjung Aan beach. Hike up in the hour before sunset and stay until the colours fade completely. It is the finest sunset viewpoint in all of south Lombok.
Without reservation, yes. It has more than 50 beaches within an hour by scooter, world-class surf, lower prices than Bali, no tourist levy, and an authenticity that Bali’s south coast lost long ago. Go before that changes.
SilkAir from Singapore, AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur, and Lion Air, Wings Air, Garuda, and Batik Air from Indonesian cities including Bali (25 minutes).
Why Visit Lombok Instead of Bali?
Three reasons, simply stated.
Lombok is less crowded. The beaches I have described in this guide were, in most cases, empty or near-empty. In Bali, that simply does not happen.
Lombok has an extraordinary number of beaches. More than 50 are reachable from Kuta within an hour by scooter. The variety — crescent bays, surf breaks, secluded coves, white sand arcs — is unmatched anywhere I have been.
Lombok is cheaper. Hotels, food, scooter rental, everything costs less here than Bali, and the quality is excellent. And in 2026, Bali charges every visitor a IDR 150,000 tourist levy. Lombok charges nothing.

Love your post. You introduced me to someplace new. I have been intrigued by visiting Indonesia for a while but wasn’t excited about the over commercialized and touristy Bali. This gives me a FANTASTIC alternative. Thanks!
