Shwedagon Pagoda – inside a world of Gold

I landed in Yangon Airport in a sunny evening. It was about 4:00 PM. I had to catch a bus to Bagan at 8:00 PM from the Aung Mingalar bus station. So, I had technically little over 3 hours to see something. From the airport, I tried to validate my idea of going to see the Shwedagon pagoda and catch the bus afterwards. They just simply told me that I was going to miss the bus if I do so. They suggested me to go to some alternate pagodas nearby. But, I was ready to take a risk to see this gem, and...

Things to know and remember in Bagan

You must know cycling(if not motorcycling), otherwise you will loose the freedom of exploring the town. The best way to see Bagan is by Electronic bike. You should carefully choose your e bike. As it is a battery driven vehicle, it can stop working if the quality is not good. It can leave you stranded out of nowhere with a heavy bike. Rent for a bike is about 4000 to 6000 Kyat for a day. In order to enter into Bagan you need to buy a ticket of 25,000 Kyats. It will be collected in a...

Pagodas to visit in Bagan

It's hard not to fall in love with pagodas in Bagan. Each one has it's own charm. Some are bigger than others, some are architecturally different and some are so quite that you might think yourself as the only person in this earth. Here goes some of the ones I liked with the most favourite of mine in the last: Ananda temple: Built around 1100 AD, this enormous temple is pure class! This ivory coloured temple is a must see in Bagan. One important thing is not to become confused...

Where to stay in Bagan?

Bagan is mesmerising, there is absolutely no doubt about it. There are not many places on earth where you will get the kind of feelings like roaming around in Bagan. The hotels are placed in three places in Bagan. Nyaung U New Bagan Old Bagan Nyaung U is closest to the bus station(where your bus from Yangon will reach) and to the airport. Old Bagan is the closest to the archaeological sites. New Bagan is closer to the archaeological sites comparing to Nyaung U but far from...

How to go from Yangon to Bagan by road?

It will be hard to find a traveller who visits Myanmar but does not want to go to Bagan. I was no exception (and I am glad about that). As most of the travellers arrive Myanmar in Yangon International Airport, the easiest way to go to Bagan is to catch a flight. The closest airport to Bagan is Nyaung U Airport and it is pretty close to the town near Bagan. However, it is about 6 times more expensive than going by road(no surprise, right?). When I was planning to go to Bagan from Yangon, I...

Does ATM machine work in Myanmar?

Myanmar is a wonderful country, however, it is opening up recently. That is why I was not so comfortable about currency exchange through ATM before visiting there. When I called my bank here in Bangladesh to inquire about my card, they said that, it might not work there. When I asked why, they informed me that, Myanmar is under their "sanctioned country list". My bank was Standard Chartered and it was a Visa credit card issued by them. When I landed in Yangon International Airport,...
